Washoe Disenfranchisement?

Posted by: Some Guy    in Politics

There was a little-known article in the Nevada Appeal.

Two days ago, the state took the one voting machine away from the reservation. In exchange, the state delivered a boxload of mail-in ballots and  a ballot box. Although I find the concept of a paper ballot comforting, there was no information from the state concerning this. To add to the confusion, there was a third party telling the residents that they could go to the next precinct over to cast their vote. Of course, they were turned away.

Today, the local Washoe paper mistakenly stated there was still a voting machine at the Senior Center, which only added to the confusion.

The ACLU is very interested in this, stating that this is blatant disenfranchisement. Nevada, however, says that they are perfectly within their rights to remove the machine, and that if the Washoe want to vote without a mail-in ballot, they had to go to the Douglas county clerk…8 miles away.

So, we at the Democratic HQ set up a relay of drivers with “Ride to County Clerk” signs to sit out in front of the Dresslerville Senior Center on the Washoe Reservation. The GOP did nothing, but since the Washoe are 90% Democrat, we’re not surprised.

Addendum (11/8): I heard today that the powers-that-be are very pleased with the vote tallies from the Washoe Tribe in Dresslerville, in spite of the confusion. I don’t have any hard numbers, though.

Well, we got that out of the way.  Once we arrived at our polling place, the wait was 45 minutes before we got to the machine. Not bad for our cozy little county.   We were relieved to find that the machines had paper verification.

There was a bit of a kerfuffle before we got there, due to the report of a poll worker demanding photo ID from a voter.  That’s illegal here in Nevada. Now, we don’t know if they were trying to verify the voter in question due to them being one of the 200,000 some-odd voters recently purged from the Nevada voter rolls or not, but that’s still no reason for demanding an ID.  When the Dem HQ found out about it, they dispatched a team of lawyer/observers to the polling place.  Hopefully, this will be the last we hear about this. We’re hoping that it was just a case of a new poll worker making a mistake.

After voting, Miss Fish and I spend the rest of the day shuffling papers down at the Dem office.
